March 27: World Theatre Day: -- World
Theatre Day is celebrated every year on March 27. Designated by
the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1961, this day
celebrates the essence, beauty, and importance of theatre arts,
their significant role in entertainment, and the symbolic impact
that theatre has on life. This day also serves to inform
governments, politicians, institutions, and stakeholders around
the world who have not yet realized the value of theatre to the
people and its potential for economic growth. Since ancient
Greece, theatre has been a popular form of art and entertainment -
thrilling its audiences and leaving them in awe. Not only does it
entertain and educate, but theatre also combines various art forms
to give its live audience a real stage experience, which they
can't find anywhere else. World Theatre Day is celebrated annually
on March 27, promoted by the ITI through its centers, and
supported by theatre communities all over the world. The day was
initiated by ITI, following President Arvi Kivimaa's June 1961
proposal at the ninth World Congress of the ITI in Vienna - on
behalf of the ITI's Finnish Centre - for a World Theatre Day to be
instituted. The proposal was supported by the Scandinavian centers
of the ITI and publicized with enthusiasm. The next year - on
March 27, 1962, World Theatre Day was celebrated by ITI centers,
ITI Cooperating Members, theatre professionals, and theatre
organizations. Today, the day is celebrated in the 90+ ITI centers
throughout the world, with theatre universities, academies,
schools, and theatre lovers all around the globe joining in the
day's observance. Different events are organized to mark World
Theatre Day every year. A prominent feature of these annual events
is the World Theatre Day International Message, presented by a
famous art figure, reflecting on the history of theatre and a
culture of peace in today's world. The first World Theatre Day
International Message was written by French poet and playwright
Jean Cocteau in 1962. In 2021, the Message of the World Theatre
Day was authored by Helen Mirren, a multi-award-winning British
actress reputed for winning the Academy Award in 2007 for her
performance in "The Queen." On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

encourages everyone to enjoy a cup of joe with all your friends
named Joe, Jo, Joey, Joseph, and Josephine. While you're at it,
don't forget Joette, Jody, Johanna, Jodie, or any other variant of
the name Joe. If you didn't know it, you could create quite a few
nicknames from this one name. According to the Social Security
Administration, Joseph ranked No. 6 from 1893 to 1899 behind John,
William, James, George, and Charles. In 1910, it moved to No. 5.
From 1911 to 2005, it ranked No. 12 or lower. Famous Joes, Jos,
and Jo Anns, populate the world. They fill many roles, too. So
their name does not define them. Just check out the variety of
hats they wear! The origin of this day is unknown, but we know
that the name Joe or Jo refers to an everyday name. Deriving from
this is phrases like ''Lucky Joe'', or ''Average Joe.'' Weirdly,
it can also refer to a steaming hot cup of coffee. The phrase
''cup of Joe'' became popular around 1940. Since then, the phrase
stuck and became known as the name for the everyday activity of
coffee drinking. The meaning of the name Joseph is ''God will
increase''. The name also derives from ''Yosef'' which is a Hebrew
name meaning ''He will add.'' In the Bible, Joseph is an important
figure. In the Old Testament, he was the Son of Jacob and Rachel
who was exiled to Egypt and who soon became an advisor to the
Pharaoh. In the New Testament, the most well-known Joseph was
Mary's husband Joseph the carpenter, and there was also mention of
a Joseph of Arimathea who was a rich disciple. In the middle ages,
Joseph was a very common name used by the Jews and Christians and
today the name is widely used and loved in many different
cultures. Joe ranked among the top 20 most popular names every
year throughout the 20th century and it doesn't look like it will
be slowing down anytime soon. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

March 27, 1794: Naval History: The
History Of The United States Navy: The Old United States Navy (The
Old Navy, United States Navy 1775-1885): The Naval Act Of 1794: --
The United States Government establishes the United States Navy
(USN), founding it as a permanent navy, and authorizes the
building of six frigates: the USS United States, USS
Constellation, USS Constitution, USS Chesapeake, USS Congress and
USS President. The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare
service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the
eight uniformed services of the United States. It is the largest
and most capable navy in the world and it has been estimated that
in terms of tonnage of its active battle fleet alone, it is larger
than the next 13 navies combined, which includes 11 U.S. allies or
partner nations. It has the highest combined battle fleet tonnage
and the world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, with eleven in
service, two new carriers under construction, and five other
carriers planned. With 336,978 personnel on active duty and
101,583 in the Ready Reserve, the U.S. Navy is the third largest
of the U.S. military service branches in terms of personnel. It
has 290 deployable combat vessels and more than 3,700 operational
aircraft as of June 2019, making it the third-largest air force in
the world, after the United States Air Force and the United States
Army. The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy,
which was established during the American Revolutionary War and
was effectively disbanded as a separate entity shortly thereafter.
After suffering significant loss of goods and personnel at the
hands of the Barbary pirates from Algiers, the U.S. Congress
passed the Naval Act of 1794 for the construction of six heavy
frigates, the first ships of the U.S. Navy. Due to his strong
posture on having a strong standing Navy during this period, John
Adams is "often called the father of the American Navy".
The U.S. Navy played a major role in the American Civil War by
blockading the Confederacy and seizing control of its rivers. It
played the central role in the World War II defeat of Imperial
Japan. The U.S. Navy emerged from World War II as the most
powerful navy in the world. The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a
sizable global presence, deploying in strength in such areas as
the Western Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. It
is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the
littoral regions of the world, engage in forward deployments
during peacetime and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it
a frequent actor in U.S. foreign and military policy. The Navy is
administratively managed by the Department of the Navy, which is
headed by the civilian Secretary of the Navy. The Department of
the Navy is itself a division of the Department of Defense, which
is headed by the Secretary Of Defense. The Chief of Naval
Operations (CNO) is the most senior naval officer serving in the
Department of the Navy. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

March 27, 1886: The American Indian Wars
(The American Frontier Wars, The Indian Wars): The Apache Wars:
The Geronimo Campaign: The Surrender Of Geronimo: -- Geronimo,
Apache warrior chief and medicine man, ends the main phase of the
Apache Wars when he surrenders to U.S. Army Department Of Arizona
General George Crook (Apache nickname: Nantan Lupan, "Grey
Wolf"), his third and final surrender to the U.S. Army, at
the Canon De Los Embudos (Canyon Of The Funnels) in the Sierra
Madre Mountains about 86 miles (138 km) from Fort Bowie at Apache
Pass, Arizona and about 20 miles (32 km) south of the
international border, near the Sonora/Chihuahua border. Geronimo
and 27 other Apaches were later sent to join the rest of the
Chiricahua tribe, which had been previously exiled to Florida.
While holding him as a prisoner, the United States capitalized on
Geronimo's fame among non-Indians by displaying him at various
fairs and exhibitions. In 1898, for example, Geronimo was
exhibited at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska;
seven years later, the Indian Office provided Geronimo for use in
a parade at the second inauguration of President Theodore
Roosevelt. He died at the Fort Sill hospital in 1909, as a
prisoner of war, and was buried at the Fort Sill Indian Agency
Cemetery, among the graves of relatives and other Apache prisoners
of war. On June 16, 1829, Geronimo, whose name means "the one
who yawns", American tribal leader (d. February 17, 1909) was
born. He was a prominent leader and medicine man from the
Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache tribe. From 1850 to 1886
Geronimo lead numerous raids upon and resistance to US and Mexican
military campaigns in northern Mexico and in New Mexico and
Arizona. Geronimo' combat actions were part of the prolonged
period of the Apache-United States conflict following the end of
the Mexican-American War in 1848. During his final period of
conflict from 1876 to 1886 he "surrendered" three times
and accepted life on the Apache reservations in Arizona. In his
old age, Geronimo became a celebrity. He appeared at fairs,
including the 1904 World' Fair in St. Louis, where he rode a
ferris wheel, sold souvenirs and photographs of himself. He died
at the Fort Sill hospital in 1909, still a prisoner of war. US
Paratroopers beginning in 1940 famously began using the cry
"Geronimo" when jumping from a plane, and in some Warner
Brothers cartoons, paratroopers are shown not only yelling
"Geronimo" when they jump, but also show them in a
hand-over-mouth position used in cartoons to depict yawning, a
reference to Geronimo's name "the one who yawns". On

1992 Robert Duvall Julia Ormond Maximilian Schell MP4 DVD Set
March 27, 1886: #BOTD: Sergei Kirov,
Soviet Politburo member, early Bolshevik revolutionary, member of
the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic Labour
Party (d. December 1, 1934). born Sergei Mironovich Kostrikov in
Urzhum in Vyatka Governorate, Russian Empire (modern Urzhum,
Russia). Sergei Mironovich Kirov became an Old Bolshevik and
personal friend to Joseph Stalin, rising through the Communist
Party of the Soviet Union ranks to become head of the party in
Leningrad and a member of the Politburo. The Leningrad office of
the NKVD, headed by Kirov's close friend, Filipp Medved, looked
after Kirov's security. Stalin allegedly ordered Genrikh Yagoda,
the NKVD Commissar, to replace Medved with Grigory Yeremeyevich
Yevdokimov, a close associate of Stalin. However, Kirov
intervened, and had the order countermanded. As a result,
according to Alexander Orlov, an anti-soviet defector to the
United States, Stalin then ordered Yagoda to arrange the
assassination of Kirov. Yagoda ordered Medved's deputy, Vania
Zaporozhets, to undertake the job. Zaporozhets returned to
Leningrad in search of an assassin; in reviewing the files he
found the name of Leonid Nikolayev. Nevetheless, according to
other soviet defector, Grigori Tokaev, a real oppositionist
underground group had assassinated Kirov. Leonid Nikolaev, the
former first secretary of the Leningrad branch of the Communist
Party, was reputed to have assassinated outside of Kirov's offices
in the Smolny Institute, out of a rumored suspicion that he was
having an affair with Nikolaev's wife, Milda Draule, who worked at
the Smolny Institute and was rumored to have spent a weekend with
him. It is unknown whether these rumors had a basis in fact, or
were deliberately fostered by the NKVD. According to Amy Knight,
Nikolaev's wife, Milda Draule, was noted for her physical
plainness, while Kirov was known to prefer liaisons with
ballerinas and other Soviet women of notable beauty and grace.
Whatever the motivation for the assassination was, Nikolaev and
several suspected accomplices were convicted in a show trial and
executed less than 30 days later. Kirov's death was later used as
a pretext for Stalin's escalation of political repression in the
Soviet Union and the events of the Great Purge, with complicity as
a common charge for the condemned in the Moscow Trials. Kirov's
assassination is highly controversial, and there is widespread
belief in the complicity of Stalin and the NKVD in permitting the
conditions that allowed Kirov to be assassinated. Leonid
Vasilevich Nikolaev was a troubled young Soviet Communist Party
member in Leningrad. He was a small, thin man, about five feet
tall; even as an adult he showed the effects of childhood rickets
and malnutrition. He had difficulty holding a job, and had been
reprimanded by the Party for having refused a posting that was not
to his liking. Eventually, the Party expelled him as a member.
Unemployed, he soon ran short of money, and blamed the Party for
his troubles. His wife Milda Draule was a member of a regional
party committee, and he had a strong suspicion that she had a love
affair with Sergei Kirov, the Party administrator of the Leningrad
district. As Nikolaev's troubles grew, he became steadily more
obsessed with the idea of "striking a blow." On October
15, 1934, he was arrested by the NKVD, allegedly for loitering
around the Smolny Institute, where Kirov had his offices. The
Smolny guards had discovered a loaded 7.62 mm Nagant M1895
revolver in Nikolaev's briefcase; some Soviet sources later argued
that Nikolaev did have a permit to carry a loaded handgun. After
Nikolaev's visit, the NKVD failed to augment Kirov's security;
instead, it withdrew all police protection for Kirov with the
exception of a police escort to Smolny and a manned security post
at the entrance to his offices. On the afternoon of December 1,
1934, Nikolaev paid a final visit to the Smolny Institute offices.
With Stalin's alleged approval, the NKVD had previously withdrawn
the remaining guards manning the security desk at Smolny.
Unopposed, Nikolaev made his way to the third floor, where he shot
Kirov in the back of the neck with his Nagant revolver. As former
Soviet official and author Alexander Barmine noted, "the
negligence of the NKVD in protecting such a high party official
was without precedent in the Soviet Union". He is buried at
The Kremlin Wall Necropolis in Moscow. After Kirov's death, Stalin
called for swift punishment of the traitors and those found
negligent in Kirov's death. Borisov, one of the first to come upon
the scene, was immediately arrested; he died the day after Kirov's
assassination, allegedly as the result of a fall from a truck in
which he was being transported by the NKVD. On December 28-29,
1934, Nikolaev and 13 other people as members of the
"counterrevolutionary group" were tried by the Military
Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR under Vasili Ulrikh's
chairmanship. At 5:45 AM on December 29, all of them were
sentenced to death and executed by shooting an hour later. For
Kirov's murder, a total of 117 people were arrested and killed,
including Nikolaev's 85-year-old mother, his brother, sisters, and
cousin. Milda Draule survived her husband by three months before
being executed herself. Their infant son (who was named Marx
following the Bolshevik naming fashion) was sent into an
orphanage. Marx Draule was alive in 2005 when he was officially
rehabilitated as a victim of political repressions, and Milda was
also found innocent retroactively. However, Nikolaev was never
posthumously acquitted. Several NKVD officers from the Leningrad
branch were convicted of negligence for not adequately protecting
Kirov, and were sentenced to prison terms of up to ten years.
However, Barmine claimed they never served their prison sentences;
instead, they were transferred to executive posts in Stalin's
labour camps for a period of time (in effect, a demotion).
Initially, a Communist Party communique reported that Nikolaev's
guilt had been established, and that he had confessed that he
acted at the behest of a 'fascist power', receiving money from an
unidentified 'foreign consul' in Leningrad. Barmine further
claimed 104 other defendants, who were already in prison at the
time of Kirov's assassination, and who had no demonstrable
connection to Nikolaev, were found guilty of complicity in the
'fascist plot' against Kirov, and were summarily executed.
However, a few days later, during a subsequent Communist Party
meeting of the Moscow District, the Party secretary announced in a
speech that Nikolaev had been personally interrogated by Stalin
the very next day after the assassination, an unheard-of event for
a party leader such as Stalin:"Comrade Stalin personally
directed the investigation of Kirov's assassination. He questioned
Nikolaev at length. The leaders of the Opposition placed the gun
in Nikolaev's hand!" Other speakers rose to condemn the
Opposition: "The Central Committee must be pitiless - the
Party must be purged..the record of every member must be
scrutinized..." No one at the meeting mentioned the theory of
fascist agents. Kirov's death meant the beginning of Stalin's
Great Purge. As author and Menshevik scholar Boris Nikolaevsky
pointed out, "One thing is certain: the only man who profited
by the Kirov assassination was Stalin." Indeed, Stalin ater
even used the Kirov assassination to eliminate the remainder of
the Opposition leadership against him, accusing Grigory Zinoviev,
Lev Kamenev, Abram Prigozhin and others who had stood with Kirov
in opposing Stalin (or simply failed to acquiesce to Stalin's
views), of having connections with Nikolaev and facilitating the
assassination. The Great Purge or the Great Terror, also known as
the Year of '37 and the Yezhovschina ("Period Of Yezhov',
names for Nikolai Yezhov, head of the NKVD Soviet secret police
during the height of the Great Purge), was a campaign of political
repression in the Soviet Union that occurred from 1936 to 1938. It
involved a large-scale repression of relatively wealthy peasants
(kulaks); genocidal acts against ethnic minorities; a purge of the
Communist Party, government officials, and the Red Army
leadership; widespread police surveillance; suspicion of
saboteurs; counter-revolutionaries; imprisonment; and arbitrary
executions. Historians estimate the total number of deaths due to
Stalinist repression in 1937-38 to be between 680,000 and
1,200,000. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

Russell, American jazz clarinet player, saxophonist, and composer
(d. February 15, 1969) is #born Charles Ellsworth Russell in
Maplewood, Missouri. As a child, he first studied violin, but
"couldn't get along with it", then piano, disliking the
scales and chord exercises, and then drums - including all the
associated special effects. Then his father sneaked young
Ellsworth into a dance at the local Elks Club to a four- or
five-piece band led by New Orleans jazz clarinetist Alcide
"Yellow" Nunez. Russell was amazed by Nunez's
improvisations: "[He] played the melody, then got hot and
played jazz. That was something. How did he know where he was or
where he was going?" Pee Wee now decided that his primary
instrument would be the clarinet, and the type of music he would
play would be jazz. Accordingly, he played clarinet and saxophones
early in his career, but he eventually focused solely on clarinet.
With a highly individualistic and spontaneous clarinet style that
"defied classification", Russell began his career
playing Dixieland jazz, but throughout his career incorporated
elements of newer developments such as swing, bebop and free jazz.
In the words of the poet Philip Larkin, "No one familiar with
the characteristic excitement of his solos, their lurid,
snuffling, asthmatic voicelessness, notes leant on till they
split, and sudden passionate intensities, could deny the
uniqueness of his contribution to jazz." His last gig was
with promoter/pianest George Wein at the inaugural ball for
President Richard Nixon on January 21, 1969. Russell died in a
hospital of chronic pancreatitis and cirrhosis of the liver in

March 27, 1921: #BOTD: #HBD! Harold
Nicholas, African American dancer specializing in tap, the younger
half of the tap-dancing pair the Nicholas Brothers, two of the
world's greatest dancers (d. July 3, 2000) is #born Harold Lloyd
Nicholas in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Harold along with his
brother Fayard Nicholas grew up primarily in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. He learned to dance while watching vaudeville shows
with his brother while their musician parents played in the
orchestra. His father, Ulysses D. Nicholas, was a drummer and his
mother, Viola Harden Nicholas, was a pianist. In 1932, when Harold
was only 11 and his brother Fayard was 18, they became the
featured act at Cotton Club in New York City. The brothers earned
fame with a unique style of rhythm tap that blended masterful jazz
steps with daredevil athletic moves and an elegance of motion
worthy of ballet. They appeared in the Ziegfeld Follies on
Broadway and in London they worked with jazz choreographer Buddy
Bradley. The performances led them to a career in film. Nicholas
appeared in over 60 films, including the MGM musicals An
All-Colored Vaudeville Show (1935), Stormy Weather (1943) with
their signature staircase dance, The Pirate (1948), and Hard Four
(2007). The Nicholas brothers also starred in the 20th Century-Fox
musicals Down Argentine Way (1940), Sun Valley Serenade (1941),
and Orchestra Wives (1942). Fred Astaire told the brothers that
their dazzling footwork, leaps and splits in the Jumpin' Jive
dance in Stormy Weather (1943) produced the greatest movie musical
number he had ever seen. In the number, the brothers dance on a
piano and leap over performing musicians. Their last film together
was 1948's The Pirate, in which Gene Kelly danced with them,
breaking the color barrier. Harold went on to work as a solo
artist, moving to France and touring as a singer and dancer. He
appeared in the French film L'Empire De La Nuit. Harold returned
to America occasionally to do shows with his brother. Harold also
appeared in the films Uptown Saturday Night (1974), Tap (1989),
The Five Heartbeats (1991) and Funny Bones (1995). Carnegie Hall
sold out for a tribute to him and his brother in 1998, who were
both present. By that time he had been living on New York's Upper
West Side, where he lived for approximately 20 years with his
third wife Rigmor Alfredsson Newman, a producer. Harold Nicholas
died in New York City at the age of 79 from heart failure. He is
buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, New York. Nicholas was
inducted into the National Museum of Dance C.V. Whitney Hall of
Fame in 2001, along with his brother Fayard Nicholas.

March 27, 1943: World War II: The Pacific
War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Pacific Theater Of World War II):
The Pacific Ocean Theater Of World War II: The American Theater Of
World War II (The Americas Theater Of World War II): The Aleutian
Islands Campaign (The Alaksa Campaign) (Japanese: Aryushan Homen
No Tatakai, "The Battle Of The Aleutians"): The Battle
Of The Komandorski Islands: -- In a naval battle between American
and Imperial Japanese forces which took place in the North Pacific
some 100 miles south of the Soviet Komandorski Islands and 180
miles west of Attu Island, United States Navy forces intercept
Japanese attempting to reinforce a garrison at Kiska Island in the
Rat Islands group of the Aleutian Islands just to the west of the
International Date Line. Because of the remote location of the
battle and chance encounter on open ocean, neither fleet had air
or submarine assistance, making this one of the few engagements
exclusively between surface ships in the Pacific Theater and one
of the last pure gunnery duels between fleets of major surface
combatants in naval history. The battle was a daylight surface
engagement in which the inferior American force escaped complete
destruction mostly by luck. Although the Japanese cruisers heavily
outgunned the American force, the engagement was tactically
inconclusive; with the Japanese fleet on the edge of victory, Vice
Admiral Boshiro Hosogaya, commander of the Japanese fleet, not
realizing the heavy damage his ships had inflicted, and fearing
American war planes would appear, retired without destroying his
enemy. This amounted to a strategic defeat; both fleets suffered
damage, and the U.S. Navy warships executed an unlikely escape.
Thebattle ended Japanese attempts to resupply the Aleutian
garrisons by surface ship, leaving only submarines to conduct
supply runs. As a result of his failure to defeat the American
force, Hosogaya was accordingly retired from active service after
the battle and assigned to govern a group of South Pacific
islands. The U.S. fleet, under the command of Rear Admiral Charles
McMorris, consisted of the heavy cruiser Salt Lake City, the light
cruiser Richmond and the destroyers Coghlan, Bailey, Dale and
Monaghan. It was sent when the United States became aware of
Japanese plans to send a supply convoy to their forces on the
Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and the fleet with tasked with
preventing this. American intelligence estimated that the Japanese
escort consisted of one heavy cruiser, one light cruiser, and four
destroyers. However, the Japanese 5th Fleet had been reinforced by
two more cruisers, so that the Japanese escort force actually
consisted of the heavy cruisers Nachi and Maya, the light cruisers
Tama and Abukuma, and the destroyers Wakaba, Hatsushimo, Ikazuchi,
and Inazuma. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

March 27, 1964: Natural Disasters:
Natural Disasters In The United States: Earthquakes (Quakes,
Tremors, Temblors): The 1964 Alaskan Earthquake (The Great Alaskan
Earthquake, The Good Friday Earthquake): -- The most powerful
earthquake in North American history and the second most powerful
earthquake recorded in world history occurs with a magnitude of
9.2 megathrust at 5:36 pm Alaska Standard Time (AKST) across
south-central Alaska, caused about 131 deaths, ground fissures,
collapsing structures and tsunamis and inflicting massive damage
to the city of Anchorage. The 1964 Alaskan Earthquake, also known
as the Great Alaskan Earthquake and Good Friday Earthquake, causes
ground fissures, collapsing structures, and tsunamis across
south-central Alaska, resulting in about 131 deaths. Lasting four
minutes and thirty-eight seconds, some six hundred miles (970 km)
of fault ruptured at once and moved up to 60 ft (18 m), releasing
about 500 years of stress buildup. Soil liquefaction, fissures,
landslides, and other ground failures caused major structural
damage in several communities and much damage to property.
Anchorage sustained great destruction or damage to many
inadequately earthquake-engineered houses, buildings, and
infrastructure (paved streets, sidewalks, water and sewer mains,
electrical systems, and other man-made equipment), particularly in
the several landslide zones along Knik Arm. Two hundred miles (320
km) southwest, some areas near Kodiak were permanently raised by
30 feet (9 m). Southeast of Anchorage, areas around the head of
Turnagain Arm near Girdwood and Portage dropped as much as 8 feet
(2.4 m), requiring reconstruction and fill to raise the Seward
Highway above the new high tide mark. In Prince William Sound,
Port Valdez suffered a massive underwater landslide, resulting in
the deaths of 32 people between the collapse of the Valdez city
harbor and docks, and inside the ship that was docked there at the
time. Nearby, a 27-foot (8.2 m) tsunami destroyed the village of
Chenega, killing 23 of the 68 people who lived there; survivors
out-ran the wave, climbing to high ground. Post-quake tsunamis
severely affected Whittier, Seward, Kodiak, and other Alaskan
communities, as well as people and property in British Columbia,
Washington, Oregon, and California. Tsunamis also caused damage in
Hawaii and Japan. Evidence of motion directly related to the
earthquake was also reported from Florida and Texas. On Sale @ 15%

(Polish: Kryzys Bydgoski), The Bydgoszcz Provocation): The 1981
Warning Strike In Poland: -- The quickly growing Solidarity
movement faced one of the biggest challenges in its short history,
when during the Bydgoszcz events, several members of Solidarity,
including Jan Rulewski, Mariusz Labentowicz and Roman Bartoszcze,
were brutally beaten up by the security services, such as Milicja
Obywatelska and ZOMO. The Bydgoszcz Events soon became widely
known across Poland, and on March 24, 1981, Solidarity decided to
go on a nationwide strike in protest against the violence. The
strike was planned for Tuesday, March 31, 1981. On March 25, Lech
Walesa met Deputy Prime Minister Mieczyslaw Rakowski of the Polish
United Workers' Party, but their talks were fruitless. Two days
later, a four-hour national warning strike took place. It was the
biggest strike in the history of the Soviet Bloc and in the
history of Poland. According to several sources, between 12
million and 14 million Poles took part in it. On Sale @ 15% Off

March 27, 1993: China: The History Of
China: The People's Republic of China (PRC): The Chinese Communist
Party (CCP) (The Communist Party of China (CPC)): General
Secretaries Of The Chinese Communist Party: Paramount Leaders: --
Jiang Zemin is appointed President of the People's Republic Of
China. Jiang Zemin, Chinese engineer and politician, former
General Secretary of the Communist Party of China from 1989 to
2002, 5th President of China from 1993 to 2003 (August 17, 1926 -
November 30, 2022) ws born Zemin Jiang in Yangzhou, Jiangsu,
Kiangtu County, Kiangsu, Republic Of China. Jiang has been
described as the "core of the third generation" of
Communist Party leaders since 1989. Jiang came to power
unexpectedly as a compromise candidate following the Tiananmen
Square protests of 1989, when he replaced Zhao Ziyang as General
Secretary after Zhao was ousted for his support for the student
movement. With the waning influence of Eight Elders due to old age
and with the death of Deng Xiaoping in 1997, Jiang consolidated
his hold on power and became the "paramount leader" of
the party and the country in the 1990s. Urged by Deng's Southern
Tour in 1992 to accelerate "opening up and reform",
Jiang officially introduced the term "socialist market
economy" in his speech during the 14th National Congress of
the Communist Party of China held later that year, ending a period
of ideological uncertainty and economic stagnation following 1989.
Under Jiang's leadership, China experienced substantial economic
growth with the continuation of reforms, saw the peaceful return
of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom in 1997 and Macau from
Portugal in 1999 and improved its relations with the outside world
while the Communist Party maintained its tight control over the
government. His contributions to party doctrine, known as the
"Three Represents," were written into the party's
constitution in 2002. Jiang vacated the post of party General
Secretary and Politburo Standing Committee in 2002, but did not
relinquish all of his leadership titles until 2005, and continued
to influence affairs until much later. Jiang is the longest-living
paramount leader in the history of the PRC, surpassing Deng
Xiaoping on February 14, 2019. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

is shot down by a S-125 Neva/Pechora surface-to-air missile (SAM)
shot by a Yugoslav army unit, the first and only stealth aircraft
to be lost in combat. The pilot ejected safely and was rescued by
allied search and rescue forces. The F-117, which entered service
with the U.S Air Force in 1983, was widely seen as one of the most
advanced pieces of U.S. military equipment. At the same time,
Yugoslav air defenses were considered relatively obsolete. Lt.
Colonel Zoltan Dani, commander of the 3rd Battalion of the 250th
