March 27: World Theatre Day: -- World Theatre Day is celebrated every year on March 27. Designated by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) in 1961, this day celebrates the essence, beauty, and importance of theatre arts, their significant role in entertainment, and the symbolic impact that theatre has on life. This day also serves to inform governments, politicians, institutions, and stakeholders around the world who have not yet realized the value of theatre to the people and its potential for economic growth. Since ancient Greece, theatre has been a popular form of art and entertainment - thrilling its audiences and leaving them in awe. Not only does it entertain and educate, but theatre also combines various art forms to give its live audience a real stage experience, which they can't find anywhere else. World Theatre Day is celebrated annually on March 27, promoted by the ITI through its centers, and supported by theatre communities all over the world. The day was initiated by ITI, following President Arvi Kivimaa's June 1961 proposal at the ninth World Congress of the ITI in Vienna - on behalf of the ITI's Finnish Centre - for a World Theatre Day to be instituted. The proposal was supported by the Scandinavian centers of the ITI and publicized with enthusiasm. The next year - on March 27, 1962, World Theatre Day was celebrated by ITI centers, ITI Cooperating Members, theatre professionals, and theatre organizations. Today, the day is celebrated in the 90+ ITI centers throughout the world, with theatre universities, academies, schools, and theatre lovers all around the globe joining in the day's observance. Different events are organized to mark World Theatre Day every year. A prominent feature of these annual events is the World Theatre Day International Message, presented by a famous art figure, reflecting on the history of theatre and a culture of peace in today's world. The first World Theatre Day International Message was written by French poet and playwright Jean Cocteau in 1962. In 2021, the Message of the World Theatre Day was authored by Helen Mirren, a multi-award-winning British actress reputed for winning the Academy Award in 2007 for her performance in "The Queen." March 27: National Joe Day: -- A day that encourages everyone to enjoy a cup of joe with all your friends named Joe, Jo, Joey, Joseph, and Josephine. While you're at it, don't forget Joette, Jody, Johanna, Jodie, or any other variant of the name Joe. If you didn't know it, you could create quite a few nicknames from this one name. According to the Social Security Administration, Joseph ranked No. 6 from 1893 to 1899 behind John, William, James, George, and Charles. In 1910, it moved to No. 5. From 1911 to 2005, it ranked No. 12 or lower. Famous Joes, Jos, and Jo Anns, populate the world. They fill many roles, too. So their name does not define them. Just check out the variety of hats they wear! The origin of this day is unknown, but we know that the name Joe or Jo refers to an everyday name. Deriving from this is phrases like ''Lucky Joe'', or ''Average Joe.'' Weirdly, it can also refer to a steaming hot cup of coffee. The phrase ''cup of Joe'' became popular around 1940. Since then, the phrase stuck and became known as the name for the everyday activity of coffee drinking. The meaning of the name Joseph is ''God will increase''. The name also derives from ''Yosef'' which is a Hebrew name meaning ''He will add.'' In the Bible, Joseph is an important figure. In the Old Testament, he was the Son of Jacob and Rachel who was exiled to Egypt and who soon became an advisor to the Pharaoh. In the New Testament, the most well-known Joseph was Mary's husband Joseph the carpenter, and there was also mention of a Joseph of Arimathea who was a rich disciple. In the middle ages, Joseph was a very common name used by the Jews and Christians and today the name is widely used and loved in many different cultures. Joe ranked among the top 20 most popular names every year throughout the 20th century and it doesn't look like it will be slowing down anytime soon. March 27, 1309: Christianity: Roman Catholicism: The Latin Church (Latin: Ecclesia Latina): Excommunication: Interdiction: The Excommunication And Interdiction Of Venice: -- Pope Clement V imposes excommunication and interdiction on Venice, and a general prohibition of all commercial intercourse with Venice, which had seized on Ferrara, a papal fiefdom. Ferrara, then as now a comune (municipality) in Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy, was taken into the Papal states (to the exclusion of the land holdings of its rulers, The House Of Este, which was to become the capital city of Ferrara), papal armies clashed with Venice and their populace. When excommunication and interdict failed to have their intended effect, Clement V, best known for the demise of the order of the Knights Templar and for moving the Papacy from Rome to Avignon (The Avignon Papacy), preached a crusade against the Venetians in May 1309, declaring that Venetians captured abroad might be sold into slavery, like non-Christians. Finally, Clement's legate, Cardinal Pelagrue, overthrew the Venetians in a battle fought on August 28, 1309. Twenty four years later, at the conclusion of the English Civil War, he was brought before a high court of justice at Westminster Hall on charges of treason. He maintained the Divine Right of kings to rule and opposed the Parliament Of England' challenges to his authoritarian style. This resulted in the English Civil War (1642-1651). The Civil War had been fought over whether the King' power was absolute, or was limited by the powers of Parliament. Oliver Cromwell had led the Parliamentary forces to victory over the Royals. March 27, 1794: Naval History: The History Of The United States Navy: The Old United States Navy (The Old Navy, United States Navy 1775-1885): The Naval Act Of 1794: -- The United States Government establishes the United States Navy (USN), founding it as a permanent navy, and authorizes the building of six frigates: the USS United States, USS Constellation, USS Constitution, USS Chesapeake, USS Congress and USS President. The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the eight uniformed services of the United States. It is the largest and most capable navy in the world and it has been estimated that in terms of tonnage of its active battle fleet alone, it is larger than the next 13 navies combined, which includes 11 U.S. allies or partner nations. It has the highest combined battle fleet tonnage and the world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, with eleven in service, two new carriers under construction, and five other carriers planned. With 336,978 personnel on active duty and 101,583 in the Ready Reserve, the U.S. Navy is the third largest of the U.S. military service branches in terms of personnel. It has 290 deployable combat vessels and more than 3,700 operational aircraft as of June 2019, making it the third-largest air force in the world, after the United States Air Force and the United States Army. The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which was established during the American Revolutionary War and was effectively disbanded as a separate entity shortly thereafter. After suffering significant loss of goods and personnel at the hands of the Barbary pirates from Algiers, the U.S. Congress passed the Naval Act of 1794 for the construction of six heavy frigates, the first ships of the U.S. Navy. Due to his strong posture on having a strong standing Navy during this period, John Adams is "often called the father of the American Navy". The U.S. Navy played a major role in the American Civil War by blockading the Confederacy and seizing control of its rivers. It played the central role in the World War II defeat of Imperial Japan. The U.S. Navy emerged from World War II as the most powerful navy in the world. The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a sizable global presence, deploying in strength in such areas as the Western Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. It is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the world, engage in forward deployments during peacetime and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it a frequent actor in U.S. foreign and military policy. The Navy is administratively managed by the Department of the Navy, which is headed by the civilian Secretary of the Navy. The Department of the Navy is itself a division of the Department of Defense, which is headed by the Secretary Of Defense. The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) is the most senior naval officer serving in the Department of the Navy. March 27, 1886: The American Indian Wars (The American Frontier Wars, The Indian Wars): The Apache Wars: The Geronimo Campaign: The Surrender Of Geronimo: -- Geronimo, Apache warrior chief and medicine man, ends the main phase of the Apache Wars when he surrenders to U.S. Army Department Of Arizona General George Crook (Apache nickname: Nantan Lupan, "Grey Wolf"), his third and final surrender to the U.S. Army, at the Canon De Los Embudos (Canyon Of The Funnels) in the Sierra Madre Mountains about 86 miles (138 km) from Fort Bowie at Apache Pass, Arizona and about 20 miles (32 km) south of the international border, near the Sonora/Chihuahua border. Geronimo and 27 other Apaches were later sent to join the rest of the Chiricahua tribe, which had been previously exiled to Florida. While holding him as a prisoner, the United States capitalized on Geronimo's fame among non-Indians by displaying him at various fairs and exhibitions. In 1898, for example, Geronimo was exhibited at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska; seven years later, the Indian Office provided Geronimo for use in a parade at the second inauguration of President Theodore Roosevelt. He died at the Fort Sill hospital in 1909, as a prisoner of war, and was buried at the Fort Sill Indian Agency Cemetery, among the graves of relatives and other Apache prisoners of war. On June 16, 1829, Geronimo, whose name means "the one who yawns", American tribal leader (d. February 17, 1909) was born. He was a prominent leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache tribe. From 1850 to 1886 Geronimo lead numerous raids upon and resistance to US and Mexican military campaigns in northern Mexico and in New Mexico and Arizona. Geronimo' combat actions were part of the prolonged period of the Apache-United States conflict following the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848. During his final period of conflict from 1876 to 1886 he "surrendered" three times and accepted life on the Apache reservations in Arizona. In his old age, Geronimo became a celebrity. He appeared at fairs, including the 1904 World' Fair in St. Louis, where he rode a ferris wheel, sold souvenirs and photographs of himself. He died at the Fort Sill hospital in 1909, still a prisoner of war. US Paratroopers beginning in 1940 famously began using the cry "Geronimo" when jumping from a plane, and in some Warner Brothers cartoons, paratroopers are shown not only yelling "Geronimo" when they jump, but also show them in a hand-over-mouth position used in cartoons to depict yawning, a reference to Geronimo's name "the one who yawns". March 27, 1886: #BOTD: Sergei Kirov, Soviet Politburo member, early Bolshevik revolutionary, member of the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (d. December 1, 1934). born Sergei Mironovich Kostrikov in Urzhum in Vyatka Governorate, Russian Empire (modern Urzhum, Russia). Sergei Mironovich Kirov became an Old Bolshevik and personal friend to Joseph Stalin, rising through the Communist Party of the Soviet Union ranks to become head of the party in Leningrad and a member of the Politburo. The Leningrad office of the NKVD, headed by Kirov's close friend, Filipp Medved, looked after Kirov's security. Stalin allegedly ordered Genrikh Yagoda, the NKVD Commissar, to replace Medved with Grigory Yeremeyevich Yevdokimov, a close associate of Stalin. However, Kirov intervened, and had the order countermanded. As a result, according to Alexander Orlov, an anti-soviet defector to the United States, Stalin then ordered Yagoda to arrange the assassination of Kirov. Yagoda ordered Medved's deputy, Vania Zaporozhets, to undertake the job. Zaporozhets returned to Leningrad in search of an assassin; in reviewing the files he found the name of Leonid Nikolayev. Nevetheless, according to other soviet defector, Grigori Tokaev, a real oppositionist underground group had assassinated Kirov. Leonid Nikolaev, the former first secretary of the Leningrad branch of the Communist Party, was reputed to have assassinated outside of Kirov's offices in the Smolny Institute, out of a rumored suspicion that he was having an affair with Nikolaev's wife, Milda Draule, who worked at the Smolny Institute and was rumored to have spent a weekend with him. It is unknown whether these rumors had a basis in fact, or were deliberately fostered by the NKVD. According to Amy Knight, Nikolaev's wife, Milda Draule, was noted for her physical plainness, while Kirov was known to prefer liaisons with ballerinas and other Soviet women of notable beauty and grace. Whatever the motivation for the assassination was, Nikolaev and several suspected accomplices were convicted in a show trial and executed less than 30 days later. Kirov's death was later used as a pretext for Stalin's escalation of political repression in the Soviet Union and the events of the Great Purge, with complicity as a common charge for the condemned in the Moscow Trials. Kirov's assassination is highly controversial, and there is widespread belief in the complicity of Stalin and the NKVD in permitting the conditions that allowed Kirov to be assassinated. Leonid Vasilevich Nikolaev was a troubled young Soviet Communist Party member in Leningrad. He was a small, thin man, about five feet tall; even as an adult he showed the effects of childhood rickets and malnutrition. He had difficulty holding a job, and had been reprimanded by the Party for having refused a posting that was not to his liking. Eventually, the Party expelled him as a member. Unemployed, he soon ran short of money, and blamed the Party for his troubles. His wife Milda Draule was a member of a regional party committee, and he had a strong suspicion that she had a love affair with Sergei Kirov, the Party administrator of the Leningrad district. As Nikolaev's troubles grew, he became steadily more obsessed with the idea of "striking a blow." On October 15, 1934, he was arrested by the NKVD, allegedly for loitering around the Smolny Institute, where Kirov had his offices. The Smolny guards had discovered a loaded 7.62 mm Nagant M1895 revolver in Nikolaev's briefcase; some Soviet sources later argued that Nikolaev did have a permit to carry a loaded handgun. After Nikolaev's visit, the NKVD failed to augment Kirov's security; instead, it withdrew all police protection for Kirov with the exception of a police escort to Smolny and a manned security post at the entrance to his offices. On the afternoon of December 1, 1934, Nikolaev paid a final visit to the Smolny Institute offices. With Stalin's alleged approval, the NKVD had previously withdrawn the remaining guards manning the security desk at Smolny. Unopposed, Nikolaev made his way to the third floor, where he shot Kirov in the back of the neck with his Nagant revolver. As former Soviet official and author Alexander Barmine noted, "the negligence of the NKVD in protecting such a high party official was without precedent in the Soviet Union". He is buried at The Kremlin Wall Necropolis in Moscow. After Kirov's death, Stalin called for swift punishment of the traitors and those found negligent in Kirov's death. Borisov, one of the first to come upon the scene, was immediately arrested; he died the day after Kirov's assassination, allegedly as the result of a fall from a truck in which he was being transported by the NKVD. On December 28-29, 1934, Nikolaev and 13 other people as members of the "counterrevolutionary group" were tried by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR under Vasili Ulrikh's chairmanship. At 5:45 AM on December 29, all of them were sentenced to death and executed by shooting an hour later. For Kirov's murder, a total of 117 people were arrested and killed, including Nikolaev's 85-year-old mother, his brother, sisters, and cousin. Milda Draule survived her husband by three months before being executed herself. Their infant son (who was named Marx following the Bolshevik naming fashion) was sent into an orphanage. Marx Draule was alive in 2005 when he was officially rehabilitated as a victim of political repressions, and Milda was also found innocent retroactively. However, Nikolaev was never posthumously acquitted. Several NKVD officers from the Leningrad branch were convicted of negligence for not adequately protecting Kirov, and were sentenced to prison terms of up to ten years. However, Barmine claimed they never served their prison sentences; instead, they were transferred to executive posts in Stalin's labour camps for a period of time (in effect, a demotion). Initially, a Communist Party communique reported that Nikolaev's guilt had been established, and that he had confessed that he acted at the behest of a 'fascist power', receiving money from an unidentified 'foreign consul' in Leningrad. Barmine further claimed 104 other defendants, who were already in prison at the time of Kirov's assassination, and who had no demonstrable connection to Nikolaev, were found guilty of complicity in the 'fascist plot' against Kirov, and were summarily executed. However, a few days later, during a subsequent Communist Party meeting of the Moscow District, the Party secretary announced in a speech that Nikolaev had been personally interrogated by Stalin the very next day after the assassination, an unheard-of event for a party leader such as Stalin:"Comrade Stalin personally directed the investigation of Kirov's assassination. He questioned Nikolaev at length. The leaders of the Opposition placed the gun in Nikolaev's hand!" Other speakers rose to condemn the Opposition: "The Central Committee must be pitiless - the Party must be purged..the record of every member must be scrutinized..." No one at the meeting mentioned the theory of fascist agents. Kirov's death meant the beginning of Stalin's Great Purge. As author and Menshevik scholar Boris Nikolaevsky pointed out, "One thing is certain: the only man who profited by the Kirov assassination was Stalin." Indeed, Stalin ater even used the Kirov assassination to eliminate the remainder of the Opposition leadership against him, accusing Grigory Zinoviev, Lev Kamenev, Abram Prigozhin and others who had stood with Kirov in opposing Stalin (or simply failed to acquiesce to Stalin's views), of having connections with Nikolaev and facilitating the assassination. The Great Purge or the Great Terror, also known as the Year of '37 and the Yezhovschina ("Period Of Yezhov', names for Nikolai Yezhov, head of the NKVD Soviet secret police during the height of the Great Purge), was a campaign of political repression in the Soviet Union that occurred from 1936 to 1938. It involved a large-scale repression of relatively wealthy peasants (kulaks); genocidal acts against ethnic minorities; a purge of the Communist Party, government officials, and the Red Army leadership; widespread police surveillance; suspicion of saboteurs; counter-revolutionaries; imprisonment; and arbitrary executions. Historians estimate the total number of deaths due to Stalinist repression in 1937-38 to be between 680,000 and 1,200,000. March 27, 1906: #BOTD: #HBD! Pee Wee Russell, American jazz clarinet player, saxophonist, and composer (d. February 15, 1969) is #born Charles Ellsworth Russell in Maplewood, Missouri. As a child, he first studied violin, but "couldn't get along with it", then piano, disliking the scales and chord exercises, and then drums - including all the associated special effects. Then his father sneaked young Ellsworth into a dance at the local Elks Club to a four- or five-piece band led by New Orleans jazz clarinetist Alcide "Yellow" Nunez. Russell was amazed by Nunez's improvisations: "[He] played the melody, then got hot and played jazz. That was something. How did he know where he was or where he was going?" Pee Wee now decided that his primary instrument would be the clarinet, and the type of music he would play would be jazz. Accordingly, he played clarinet and saxophones early in his career, but he eventually focused solely on clarinet. With a highly individualistic and spontaneous clarinet style that "defied classification", Russell began his career playing Dixieland jazz, but throughout his career incorporated elements of newer developments such as swing, bebop and free jazz. In the words of the poet Philip Larkin, "No one familiar with the characteristic excitement of his solos, their lurid, snuffling, asthmatic voicelessness, notes leant on till they split, and sudden passionate intensities, could deny the uniqueness of his contribution to jazz." His last gig was with promoter/pianest George Wein at the inaugural ball for President Richard Nixon on January 21, 1969. Russell died in a hospital of chronic pancreatitis and cirrhosis of the liver in Alexandria, Virginia, less than three weeks later, aged 62. July 3, 2000) is #born Harold Lloyd Nicholas in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Harold along with his brother Fayard Nicholas grew up primarily in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He learned to dance while watching vaudeville shows with his brother while their musician parents played in the orchestra. His father, Ulysses D. Nicholas, was a drummer and his mother, Viola Harden Nicholas, was a pianist. In 1932, when Harold was only 11 and his brother Fayard was 18, they became the featured act at Cotton Club in New York City. The brothers earned fame with a unique style of rhythm tap that blended masterful jazz steps with daredevil athletic moves and an elegance of motion worthy of ballet. They appeared in the Ziegfeld Follies on Broadway and in London they worked with jazz choreographer Buddy Bradley. The performances led them to a career in film. Nicholas appeared in over 60 films, including the MGM musicals An All-Colored Vaudeville Show (1935), Stormy Weather (1943) with their signature staircase dance, The Pirate (1948), and Hard Four (2007). The Nicholas brothers also starred in the 20th Century-Fox musicals Down Argentine Way (1940), Sun Valley Serenade (1941), and Orchestra Wives (1942). Fred Astaire told the brothers that their dazzling footwork, leaps and splits in the Jumpin' Jive dance in Stormy Weather (1943) produced the greatest movie musical number he had ever seen. In the number, the brothers dance on a piano and leap over performing musicians. Their last film together was 1948's The Pirate, in which Gene Kelly danced with them, breaking the color barrier. Harold went on to work as a solo artist, moving to France and touring as a singer and dancer. He appeared in the French film L'Empire De La Nuit. Harold returned to America occasionally to do shows with his brother. Harold also appeared in the films Uptown Saturday Night (1974), Tap (1989), The Five Heartbeats (1991) and Funny Bones (1995). Carnegie Hall sold out for a tribute to him and his brother in 1998, who were both present. By that time he had been living on New York's Upper West Side, where he lived for approximately 20 years with his third wife Rigmor Alfredsson Newman, a producer. Harold Nicholas died in New York City at the age of 79 from heart failure. He is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, New York. Nicholas was inducted into the National Museum of Dance C.V. Whitney Hall of Fame in 2001, along with his brother Fayard Nicholas. #HaroldNicholas #NicholasBros #AfricanAmericans #Choreographers #Dancers #Actors #Singers #GreatestDancers #Dance #CottonClub #MP4 #VideoDownload #DVD On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/the-cotton-club-remembered-aka-the-cotton-club-at-the-ritz-mp4-or-dvd.html

March 27, 1943: World War II: The Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Pacific Ocean Theater Of World War II: The American Theater Of World War II (The Americas Theater Of World War II): The Aleutian Islands Campaign (The Alaksa Campaign) (Japanese: Aryushan Homen No Tatakai, "The Battle Of The Aleutians"): The Battle Of The Komandorski Islands: -- In a naval battle between American and Imperial Japanese forces which took place in the North Pacific some 100 miles south of the Soviet Komandorski Islands and 180 miles west of Attu Island, United States Navy forces intercept Japanese attempting to reinforce a garrison at Kiska Island in the Rat Islands group of the Aleutian Islands just to the west of the International Date Line. Because of the remote location of the battle and chance encounter on open ocean, neither fleet had air or submarine assistance, making this one of the few engagements exclusively between surface ships in the Pacific Theater and one of the last pure gunnery duels between fleets of major surface combatants in naval history. The battle was a daylight surface engagement in which the inferior American force escaped complete destruction mostly by luck. Although the Japanese cruisers heavily outgunned the American force, the engagement was tactically inconclusive; with the Japanese fleet on the edge of victory, Vice Admiral Boshiro Hosogaya, commander of the Japanese fleet, not realizing the heavy damage his ships had inflicted, and fearing American war planes would appear, retired without destroying his enemy. This amounted to a strategic defeat; both fleets suffered damage, and the U.S. Navy warships executed an unlikely escape. Thebattle ended Japanese attempts to resupply the Aleutian garrisons by surface ship, leaving only submarines to conduct supply runs. As a result of his failure to defeat the American force, Hosogaya was accordingly retired from active service after the battle and assigned to govern a group of South Pacific islands. The U.S. fleet, under the command of Rear Admiral Charles McMorris, consisted of the heavy cruiser Salt Lake City, the light cruiser Richmond and the destroyers Coghlan, Bailey, Dale and Monaghan. It was sent when the United States became aware of Japanese plans to send a supply convoy to their forces on the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and the fleet with tasked with preventing this. American intelligence estimated that the Japanese escort consisted of one heavy cruiser, one light cruiser, and four destroyers. However, the Japanese 5th Fleet had been reinforced by two more cruisers, so that the Japanese escort force actually consisted of the heavy cruisers Nachi and Maya, the light cruisers Tama and Abukuma, and the destroyers Wakaba, Hatsushimo, Ikazuchi, and Inazuma. March 27, 1964: Natural Disasters: Natural Disasters In The United States: Earthquakes (Quakes, Tremors, Temblors): The 1964 Alaskan Earthquake (The Great Alaskan Earthquake, The Good Friday Earthquake): -- The most powerful earthquake in North American history and the second most powerful earthquake recorded in world history occurs with a magnitude of 9.2 megathrust at 5:36 pm Alaska Standard Time (AKST) across south-central Alaska, caused about 131 deaths, ground fissures, collapsing structures and tsunamis and inflicting massive damage to the city of Anchorage. The 1964 Alaskan Earthquake, also known as the Great Alaskan Earthquake and Good Friday Earthquake, causes ground fissures, collapsing structures, and tsunamis across south-central Alaska, resulting in about 131 deaths. Lasting four minutes and thirty-eight seconds, some six hundred miles (970 km) of fault ruptured at once and moved up to 60 ft (18 m), releasing about 500 years of stress buildup. Soil liquefaction, fissures, landslides, and other ground failures caused major structural damage in several communities and much damage to property. Anchorage sustained great destruction or damage to many inadequately earthquake-engineered houses, buildings, and infrastructure (paved streets, sidewalks, water and sewer mains, electrical systems, and other man-made equipment), particularly in the several landslide zones along Knik Arm. Two hundred miles (320 km) southwest, some areas near Kodiak were permanently raised by 30 feet (9 m). Southeast of Anchorage, areas around the head of Turnagain Arm near Girdwood and Portage dropped as much as 8 feet (2.4 m), requiring reconstruction and fill to raise the Seward Highway above the new high tide mark. In Prince William Sound, Port Valdez suffered a massive underwater landslide, resulting in the deaths of 32 people between the collapse of the Valdez city harbor and docks, and inside the ship that was docked there at the time. Nearby, a 27-foot (8.2 m) tsunami destroyed the village of Chenega, killing 23 of the 68 people who lived there; survivors out-ran the wave, climbing to high ground. Post-quake tsunamis severely affected Whittier, Seward, Kodiak, and other Alaskan communities, as well as people and property in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California. Tsunamis also caused damage in Hawaii and Japan. Evidence of motion directly related to the earthquake was also reported from Florida and Texas. The Bydgoszcz Events soon became widely known across Poland, and on March 24, 1981, Solidarity decided to go on a nationwide strike in protest against the violence. The strike was planned for Tuesday, March 31, 1981. On March 25, Lech Walesa met Deputy Prime Minister Mieczyslaw Rakowski of the Polish United Workers' Party, but their talks were fruitless. Two days later, a four-hour national warning strike took place. It was the biggest strike in the history of the Soviet Bloc and in the history of Poland. March 27, 1993: China: The History Of China: The People's Republic of China (PRC): The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) (The Communist Party of China (CPC)): General Secretaries Of The Chinese Communist Party: Paramount Leaders: -- Jiang Zemin is appointed President of the People's Republic Of China. Jiang Zemin, Chinese engineer and politician, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of China from 1989 to 2002, 5th President of China from 1993 to 2003 (August 17, 1926 - November 30, 2022) ws born Zemin Jiang in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, Kiangtu County, Kiangsu, Republic Of China. Jiang has been described as the "core of the third generation" of Communist Party leaders since 1989. Jiang came to power unexpectedly as a compromise candidate following the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, when he replaced Zhao Ziyang as General Secretary after Zhao was ousted for his support for the student movement. With the waning influence of Eight Elders due to old age and with the death of Deng Xiaoping in 1997, Jiang consolidated his hold on power and became the "paramount leader" of the party and the country in the 1990s. Urged by Deng's Southern Tour in 1992 to accelerate "opening up and reform", Jiang officially introduced the term "socialist market economy" in his speech during the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of China held later that year, ending a period of ideological uncertainty and economic stagnation following 1989. Under Jiang's leadership, China experienced substantial economic growth with the continuation of reforms, saw the peaceful return of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom in 1997 and Macau from Portugal in 1999 and improved its relations with the outside world while the Communist Party maintained its tight control over the government. His contributions to party doctrine, known as the "Three Represents," were written into the party's constitution in 2002. Jiang vacated the post of party General Secretary and Politburo Standing Committee in 2002, but did not relinquish all of his leadership titles until 2005, and continued to influence affairs until much later. Jiang is the longest-living paramount leader in the history of the PRC, surpassing Deng Xiaoping on February 14, 2019. March 27: Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day: -- Established to recognize the unique titles of the songs that are available. There are numerous quirky country music song titles available; therefore, a special day in the calendar was established to honor them. While the lyrics to country music may be humorous, it's not always obvious from the titles. But today is all about those titles that make you pause and laugh as well as wonder what was going through the singer's head when they named the song. In the 1920s, a hybrid of Appalachian folk and blues gained national prominence. It was largely upbeat tracks for barn dances and heartfelt ballads. By the 1940s, audiences flocked to see singing cowboys like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Country music grew up among working-class Americans in the south, particularly in the Appalachian Mountains. Generations of musicians have infused English ballads with Celtic and Irish fiddle tunes, as well as other European influences. The African-American influence was often neglected. Many white musicians learned their profession from black teachers. The banjo was brought to America by slaves who taught their children how to pick. While many musical styles impacted country music, its roots can be traced back to eastern Tennessee. In the 1920s, studios in Bristol, Johnson City, and Knoxville began recording the unique sounds of mountaineer artists from the Great Smoky Mountains. The music of former Appalachian people who had relocated to Atlanta to work in its cotton mills pumped through the city's robust music culture. They dreaded the "hillbilly music" that they left behind. Promoters could now commercialize country music. Country music became an acknowledged genre when a promoter "discovered" Fiddlin' John Carson. Early A.M. radio stations began playing the distinct regional music on "barn dance" programming in the 1930s introducing new fans to country music. Until the 1980s, rural A.M. radio played mostly country music. Country music had a vast musical heritage. It increased in popularity to encompass western swing, honky tonk, country boogie, and rockabilly. Regular boundary-crossing encouraged audiences to define country music broadly. Several renowned groups released hundreds of songs in many genres. Instrumentation and style set country music apart from other genres. Banjos, acoustic and electric guitars, dobros, fiddles, and harmonicas all accompanied simple harmonies rhythmically. Initially, country musicians disliked drums for being too aggressive and noisy. But by the mid-1930s, western swing performers were adding drums. Most country music groups had a drummer by the 1950s. By the 1950s, new political and musical genres were on the horizon. Rock n' roll influenced country music, inspiring some performers to create rockabilly. In response to social and political unrest, progressive artists began producing protest songs in the 1960s. Because most country musicians knew their fans were conservative, they shunned progressive politics. Country music has endured for nearly a century due to its adaptability. Like country musicians in the 1920s and 1930s, performers since the 1970s have refused to be pigeonholed. 1970s country music was transformed by country-pop and country-rock. Country music has been hybridized into the 21st century, with country performers topping the charts. Country music continues to captivate audiences with captivating musical fusions. https://store.earthstation1.com/in-country-songs-of-the-vietnam-war-kris-kristofferson-download-dvd.html

March 27: Scribble Day: -- Today's all about celebrating the creativity and the art associated with scribbling, which anyone can do regardless of their artistic abilities. So the last time you scribbled aimlessly to relieve boredom, you might have probably not known that there is actually a day to celebrate the stress-releasing act of scribbling. Scribbling is sometimes referred to as doodling and the terms are often used interchangeably but there is a slight underlying difference between both the acts and the origin of the words. The word scribble can be traced back to the Latin 'scribere,' which actually means 'to write'. To scribble is to write letters or words hastily, often in an illegible manner. Doodle, on the other hand, refers to drawing or amateur art. Etymologically, the word doodle is derived from the German 'Dudeltopf' or 'Dudeldop,' meaning 'simpleton'. So think of these terms as follows: when students are under pressure, they scribble on their notebooks, whereas students who are bored and daydreaming in class make doodles. The history of International Scribble day itself does not go too far back as the day was recently founded by Diane Alber, author of "I'm NOT Just a Scribble" in 2019. The book is about kindness and acceptance, demonstrated by a cute character, Scribble, and encourages children to create art no matter their ability. Diane made a Facebook post about her idea of initiating a National Scribble Day and got some very positive responses from teachers, so she went ahead with it. The day is usually celebrated in schools where children gather for different activities to create their own Scribble, the character from the book. International Scribble day encourages the practice of scribbling because, after all, every artist started with a scribble! https://store.earthstation1.com/complete-steve-allen-tv-shows-4-dual-layer-dvd-megase4.html

March 27, 1361: The Plague: Pandemics: The Black Death: The Second Plague Pandemic (The Second Black Death, The Second Black Plague): The Black Death In Italy: The Second Pestilence (Italian: Pesta Secunda): -- The Second Plague Pandemic, the second pandemic of the Black Death that first decimated populations around the world in 1346-53, ends temporarily in Italy after having killed a fifth of the population, hitting Pisa, Pistoia and Florence in Tuscany especially hard, in the first recurrence of the pandemic spanning from 1361 to 1363; in the Pesta Tertia (Italian: "Third Pestilence") of 1369 to 1371, 10-15% of the remaining population of Italy died. The Second Plague Pandemic was a major series of epidemics of plague that started with the bubonic plague Black Death (also known as the Pestilence, the Great Mortality, the Plague or the Black Plague) which reached Europe in 1348 and killed up to a half of the population of Eurasia in the next four years. Although the plague died out in most places, it became endemic and recurred regularly. A series of major epidemics occurred in the late 17th century, and the disease recurred in some places until the late 18th century or the early 19th century. After this, a new strain of the bacterium gave rise to the third plague pandemic which started in Asia around the mid-19th century. Plague is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which exists in parasitic fleas of several species in the wild and of rats in human society. In an outbreak, it may kill all of its immediate hosts and thus die out, but it can remain active in other hosts that it does not kill, thereby causing a new outbreak years or decades later. The bacterium has several means of transmission and infection, including through rats carried on ships or vehicles, fleas hidden in grain and, in its more virulent forms, transmitted by blood and sputum directly between humans. https://store.earthstation1.com/timeline-tv-series-on-the-middle-ages-in-tv-newscast-format-2-dvd-se2.html

March 27, 196 BC: Archaelogy (Archeology): Great Discoveries Of Archaeology: Ancient Egypt: Hellenistic Egypt: The Ptolemaic Dynasty (The Lagid Dynasty, The Twenty-Third Dynasty Of Egypt, Dynasty XXIII, 23rd Dynasty, Dynasty 23): Egyptian Hieroglyphs: The Rosetta Stone (The Rosetta Stone Decree, The Decree Of Memphis) -- The Rosetta Stone Decree, a decree issued at Memphis, Egypt during the Ptolemaic dynasty on behalf of King Ptolemy V, was on some undetermined date carved with the date of March 27, 196 BC decree onto The Rosetta Stone. a granodiorite stele, inscribed with three different transcriptions of the decree. The top and middle texts are in Ancient Egyptian using hieroglyphic script and Demotic script, respectively, while the bottom is in Ancient Greek. As the decree has only minor differences between the three versions, the Rosetta Stone proved to be the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs. The stone, carved in black granodiorite during the Hellenistic period, is believed to have originally been displayed within a temple, possibly at nearby Sais. It was probably moved during the early Christian or medieval period, and was eventually used as building material in the construction of Fort Julien near the town of Rashid (Rosetta) in the Nile Delta. On July 15, 1799, The Rosetta Stone was found in the Egyptian village of Rosetta by French Captain Pierre-Francois Bouchard during Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign. It was the first Ancient Egyptian bilingual text recovered in modern times, and it aroused widespread public interest with its potential to decipher this previously untranslated hieroglyphic language. Lithographic copies and plaster casts began circulating among European museums and scholars. Meanwhile, British troops defeated the French in Egypt in 1801, and the original stone came into British possession under the Capitulation of Alexandria and was transported to London. It has been on public display at the British Museum almost continuously since 1802, and is the most-visited object there. Study of the decree was already under way when the first full translation of the Greek text appeared in 1803. It was 20 years, however, before the transliteration of the Egyptian scripts was announced by Jean-Francois Champollion in Paris in 1822; it took longer still before scholars were able to read Ancient Egyptian inscriptions and literature confidently. Major advances in the decoding were recognition that the stone offered three versions of the same text (1799); that the demotic text used phonetic characters to spell foreign names (1802); that the hieroglyphic text did so as well, and had pervasive similarities to the demotic (Thomas Young, 1814); and that, in addition to being used for foreign names, phonetic characters were also used to spell native Egyptian words (Champollion, 1822-1824). Ever since its rediscovery, the stone has been the focus of nationalist rivalries, including its transfer from French to British possession during the Napoleonic Wars, a long-running dispute over the relative value of Young and Champollion's contributions to the decipherment and, since 2003, demands for the stone's return to Egypt. Two other fragmentary copies of the same decree were discovered later, and several similar Egyptian bilingual or trilingual inscriptions are now known, including two slightly earlier Ptolemaic decrees (the Decree of Canopus in 238 BC, and the Memphis decree of Ptolemy IV, c. 218 BC). The Rosetta Stone is, therefore, no longer unique, but it was the essential key to modern understanding of Ancient Egyptian literature and civilisation. The term Rosetta Stone is now used in other contexts as the name for the essential clue to a new field of knowledge. https://store.earthstation1.com/hieroglypic-travel-following-in-the-footsteps-of-jeanfrancois-champo.html

V-2 rocket launching sites had been set up by the Germans around The Hague in the Netherlands on September 6, 1944. The first V-2 attack was launched from here against London on September 8, 1944 and took an estimated 5 minutes to fly the 200 miles (320 km) from the Hague to London, where it struck at 6:43pm on Chiswick, causing 13 casualties. On November 25, 1944, a V-2 rocket hit a Woolworth's shop at in London, United Kingdom, killing 168 people and seriously injuring 121. As the V-2 explosions came without warning, the government initially attempted to conceal their cause by blaming them on defective gas mains. However, the public was not fooled and soon began sardonically referring to the V-2s as "Flying gas pipes". Intercepting the supersonic V-2 missiles in flight proved virtually impossible, and other countermeasures, such as bombing the launch sites, were fairly ineffectual. March 27, 1892: #BOTD: Wilhelm Theodor H. Wulff, German-Austrian astrologer to Hitler and Himmler (d. June 9, 1979) is #born in Hamburg, Germany at 8:15 AM. In 1912 Wulff came across the horoscopes which Kepler had cast for Wallenstein, initially in 1608 and then a corrected version, based on more accurate birth data, in 1625. Wulff was so impressed with Kepler's work that he studied the celestial science and became one of the leading astrologers in Nazi Germany. In his 1968 book "Zodiac and Swastika: How Astrology Guided Hitler's Germany", Wulff recounts how Arthur Nebe -- SS functionary who held key positions in the security and police apparatus of Nazi Germany and was, from 1941, a major perpetrator of the Holocaust -- and Walter Schellenberg -- SS functionary who becomed one of the highest ranking men in the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) and eventually assumed the position as head of foreign intelligence for Nazi Germany following the abolition of the Abwehr in 1944 -- assigned him various astrological tasks; he also mentions that they had used pendulum dowsers like Ludwig Straniak -- a mystic Germanic revivalist noted for his pendulum work and forced against his will to work for the Nazis by holding his family hostage -- for similar purposes. Wulff concludes his book by arguing that "National Socialism was smashed and disappeared from the scene. Astrology [...] remained". The historian Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke takes the book as evidence that Wulff was consulted by Heinrich Himmler in the last weeks of the war. Wilhelm Theodor H. March 27, 1968: #DOTD: #RIP: Yuri Gagarin, Russian colonel, pilot, and astronaut (b. March 9, 1934) #dies while on a routine training flight from Chkalovsky Air Base as he and flight instructor Vladimir Seryogin crash in a MiG-15UTI near the town of Kirzhach. The bodies of Gagarin and Seryogin were cremated and the ashes were buried in the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square. Gagarin was survived by his wife Valentina, and daughters Yelena and Galina. The cause of the crash that killed Gagarin is not entirely certain, and has been subject to speculation about conspiracy theories over the ensuing decades. At least three investigations into the crash were conducted separately by the Air Force, official government commissions, and the KGB. According to a biography of Gagarin by Jamie Doran and Piers Bizony, Starman: The Truth Behind the Legend of Yuri Gagarin, the KGB worked "not just alongside the Air Force and the official commission members but against them." The KGB's report, declassified in March 2003, claimed that the actions of airbase personnel contributed to the crash. The report states that an air-traffic controller provided Gagarin with outdated weather information and that by the time of his flight, conditions had deteriorated significantly. Ground crew also left external fuel tanks attached to the aircraft. Gagarin's planned flight activities needed clear weather and no outboard tanks. The investigation concluded Gagarin's aircraft entered a spin, either due to a bird strike or because of a sudden move to avoid another aircraft. Because of the out-of-date weather report, the crew believed their altitude was higher than it was and could not react properly to bring the MiG-15 out of its spin. Another theory, advanced in 2005 by the original crash investigator, hypothesizes that a cabin air vent was accidentally left open by the crew or the previous pilot, leading to oxygen deprivation and leaving the crew incapable of controlling the aircraft. A similar theory, published in Air & Space/Smithsonian magazine, is that the crew detected the open vent and followed procedure by executing a rapid dive to a lower altitude. This dive caused them to lose consciousness and crash. On April 12, 2007, the Kremlin vetoed a new investigation into the death of Gagarin. Government officials said they saw no reason to begin a new investigation. In April 2011, documents from a 1968 commission set up by the Central Committee of the Communist Party to investigate the accident were declassified. The documents revealed that the commission's original conclusion was that Gagarin or Seryogin had manoeuvred sharply, either to avoid a weather balloon or to avoid "entry into the upper limit of the first layer of cloud cover", leading the jet into a "super-critical flight regime and to its stalling in complex meteorological conditions". Alexei Leonov, who was also a member of a state commission established to investigate Gagarin's death, was conducting parachute training sessions that day and heard "two loud booms in the distance". He believes that a Sukhoi Su-15 was flying below its minimum altitude and, "without realizing it because of the terrible weather conditions, he passed within 10 or 20 meters (33 or 66 ft) of Yuri and Seregin's plane while breaking the sound barrier". The resulting turbulence would have sent the MiG-15UTI into an uncontrolled spin. Leonov said the first boom he heard was that of the jet breaking the sound barrier and the second was Gagarin's plane crashing. Yuri Gagarin was born Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin in Gzhatsk, USSR. On April 12, 1961, he became the first man in space, orbiting in a capsule 187 miles above the Earth's surface in a flight lasting 108 minutes. His space flight caused a worldwide sensation and marked the beginning of the space race as the U.S. worked to catch up to the Soviets and launch an American into space. President John F. Kennedy later asserted the U.S. would land a man on the moon before the end of the 1960s. https://store.earthstation1.com/project-man-in-space-dvd-1961-secret-soviet-f1961.html

March 27, 2006: #DOTD: #RIP: Rudolf Vrba (Rudolf Urba), Czech Slovak-Jewish Canadian pharmacologist, educator, holocaust victim who became known for his daring escapee from Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in April 1944, at the height of the Holocaust, and for having co-written a detailed report about the mass murder that was taking place there, which having been distributed by George Mantello in Switzerland is credited with having halted the mass deportation of Hungary's Jews to Auschwitz in July 1944, saving more than 200,000 lives (b. September 11, 1924) #dies of cancer aged 81 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He is buried at Boundary Bay Cemetery in Tsawwassen in The Greater Vancouver Regional District. Rudolf Vrba was born Walter Rosenberg into a Jewish family in Topolcany, Czechoslovakia. As a teenager in 1942, Rudolf Vrba was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp in German-occupied Poland. On April 10, 1944, Rudolf Vrba and Alfred Wetzler escaped from Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Vrba gave a detailed account of his escape in the two part TV documentary series "Auschwitz And The Allies". After the war Vrba trained as a biochemist, working mostly in England and Canada. Vrba and fellow escapee Alfred Wetzler fled Auschwitz three weeks after German forces invaded Hungary and shortly before the SS began mass deportations of Hungary's Jewish population to the camp. The information the men dictated to Jewish officials when they arrived in Slovakia on April 24, 1944, which included that new arrivals in Auschwitz were being gassed and not "resettled" as the Germans maintained, became known as the Vrba-Wetzler report. When the War Refugee Board published it with considerable delay in November 1944, the New York Herald Tribune described it as "the most shocking document ever issued by a United States government agency". While it confirmed material in earlier reports from Polish and other escapees, the historian Miroslav Karny wrote that it was unique in its "unflinching detail". There was a delay of several weeks before the report was distributed widely enough to gain the attention of governments. Mass transports of Hungary's Jews to Auschwitz began on May 15, 1944 at a rate of 12,000 people a day. Most went straight to the gas chambers. Vrba argued until the end of his life that the deportees might have refused to board the trains, or at least that their panic would have disrupted the transports, had the report been distributed widely and sooner. From late June and into July 1944, material from the Vrba-Wetzler report appeared in newspapers and radio broadcasts in the United States and Europe, particularly in Switzerland, prompting world leaders to appeal to Hungarian regent Miklos Horthy to halt the deportations. On July 2 American and British forces bombed Budapest, and on July 6, in an effort to exert his sovereignty, Horthy ordered that the deportations should end. By then, over 434,000 Jews had been deported in 147 trains -- almost the entire Jewish population of the Hungarian countryside -- but another 200,000 in Budapest were saved. https://store.earthstation1.com/project-man-in-space-dvd-1961-secret-soviet-f1961.html

March 27, 1946: #BOTD: #HBD! Andy Bown, cofounder. keyboardist and bassist of the rock band Status Quo, is #born Andrew Steven Bown in Beckenham, Kent, England. Status Quo are a British rock band that formed in 1962. The group originated in London as The Scorpions and was founded by Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster while they were still schoolboys. After a number of lineup changes, which included the introduction of John Coghlan in 1963 and Rick Parfitt in 1967, the band became The Status Quo in 1967 and Status Quo in 1969. As of 2026, the group have been active for 60 consecutive years (despite announcing a breakup in 1984, they would play Live Aid the following year and resume normal activities in 1986). They have had over 60 chart hits in the UK - more than any other rock band - including "Pictures of Matchstick Men", "Down Down", "Rockin' All Over the World", "Whatever You Want", "In the Army Now", and "What You're Proposing". Twenty-two of these reached the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart, and fifty-seven reached the Top 40. They have released over 100 singles and 33 albums, most of which were bestsellers. Since reaching number 5 on the UK albums chart in 1972 with Piledriver, Status Quo have achieved a career total of 25 UK top ten albums, extending all the way up to their most recent release, Backbone, in 2019. As of 2015, they were one of only 50 artists to have ever achieved more than 500 total weeks on the UK Albums Chart. With their various records for both single and album releases, Status Quo are one of the most successful bands of all time in the UK. In July 1985 the band opened Live Aid at Wembley Stadium with "Rockin' All Over the World". In 1991, Status Quo received a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Status Quo appeared on the BBC's Top of the Pops more than any other band. Their success and longevity as well, in part, as their connections to the British Royal Family, including philanthropic work with the Prince's Trust, have seen them frequently described as a "national institution" by the media. Bown's first major band was the English rock band The Herd, founded in 1965. In 1966, 16-year-old Peter Frampton joined as lead singer and guitarist. The band had three UK top twenty hits in the late 1960s, including "From the Underworld" and "I Don't Want Our Loving to Die", before Frampton left in 1968 to form Humble Pie with Steve Marriott. The band broke up shortly after, reforming briefly and unsuccessfully in 1971. After The Herd dissolved, Andy Bown spent two years with Judas Jump who were the opening act of the Isle of Wight Festival 1970. He played [keyboards at first] for Frampton in the 1970s then switched to bass briefly when Rick Wills departed the Peter Frampton band in early 1975. Bown himself left the Frampton entourage less than a year later, just as Frampton was on the verge of achieving worldwide success. He went back to England where he first dabbled with a solo career (recording two solo albums for Bill Gaff's GM label, US Mercury), then resumed work with Status Quo whom he started playing keyboards for in 1973 as a session musician, including sessions with Jerry Lee Lewis on the London Sessions Album. Andy first appeared on Quo's Hello! album in that year; performing on every album by the band from 1977's Rockin' All Over the World onwards, and supporting them in concert. He joined Status Quo as a full member in 1982, and has been with them ever since. Bown released a number of singles in the 1970s, including "New York Satyricon Zany" and "Another Shipwreck", none of which charted. His most well-known song however was the theme tune to the children's series Ace of Wands, "Tarot". He also released five albums, the first of which, Gone to My Head, was released in 1972. His latest solo album Unfinished Business was released on September 5, 2011. The album was produced by Mike Paxman and recorded by Chris West, it features contributions from Henry Spinetti on drums, Mick Rogers on guitars, Trevor Bolder and Brad Lang on basses as well as vocalists Juliet Roberts and Sylvia Mason-James. It was recorded at State of the Ark Studios in Richmond, Surrey in 2010. He was the bass player in the "Surrogate Band" during Pink Floyd's The Wall tour in 1980 and 1981 and can be heard on the live album Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81. He also did some keyboards for Pink Floyd's The Final Cut album. and on Jack the Lad's last album Jackpot in 1976. In addition he played Hammond organ and 12-string guitar during the recording of Roger Waters' solo album The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking in 1984, but did not take part in Waters' subsequent tours. He still plays keyboards, guitar and harmonica with Status Quo, and is an integral part of the band, having co-written many well known Quo songs on various studio albums, most prominently collaborating with Rick Parfitt on the group's 1979 hit "Whatever You Want". https://store.earthstation1.com/offshore-pirate-radio-2-dual-layer-mp3-dvds-uk-amp-euro23.html

March 27, 1625: #DOTD: #RIP: James VI and I, King Of Scotland as James VI from July 24, 1567 and King Of England and Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish and English crowns on March 24 1603 until his death (b. June 19, 1566) #dies at Theobalds House in Hertfordshire, England during a violent attack of dysentery, aged 58. He was succeeded by his second son, Charles I. James's funeral on May 7 was a magnificent but disorderly affair. Bishop John Williams of Lincoln preached the sermon, observing, "King Solomon died in Peace, when he had lived about sixty years ... and so you know did King James". The sermon was later printed as Great Britain's Salomon [sic]. James is buried in Westminster Abbey. The position of the tomb was lost for many years until his lead coffin was found in the Henry VII vault, during an excavation in the 19th century. He was born James Charles Stuart in Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland, the only son of Mary, Queen Of Scots, and her second husband, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. As the eldest son and heir apparent of the monarch, James automatically became Duke of Rothesay and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, Both Mary and Darnley were great-grandchildren of Henry VII of England through Margaret Tudor, the older sister of Henry VIII, thus James as a great-great-grandson of Henry VII, King of England and Lord of Ireland, was a potential successor to all three thrones. Mary's rule over Scotland was insecure, and she and her husband, being Roman Catholics, faced a rebellion by Protestant noblemen. During Mary's and Darnley's difficult marriage, Darnley secretly allied himself with the rebels and conspired in the murder of the queen's private secretary, David Rizzio, just three months before James's birth. Although James wanted to bring about a closer union between the kingdoms of Scotland and England, they remained individual sovereign states, with their own parliaments, judiciaries, and laws, both ruled by James in personal union. He succeeded to the Scottish throne at the age of thirteen months, after his mother was compelled to abdicate in his favour. Four different regents governed during his minority, which ended officially in 1578, though he did not gain full control of his government until 1583. In 1603, he succeeded Elizabeth I, the last Tudor monarch of England and Ireland, who died childless. He continued to reign in all three kingdoms for 22 years, a period known as the Jacobean era, until his death in 1625. After the Union Of The Crowns, he based himself in England (the largest of the three realms) from 1603, returning to Scotland only once, in 1617, and styled himself "King of Great Britain and Ireland". He was a major advocate of a single parliament for England and Scotland. In his reign, the Plantation of Ulster and English colonisation of the Americas began. At 57 years and 246 days, James's reign in Scotland was the longest of any Scottish monarch. He achieved most of his aims in Scotland but faced great difficulties in England, including the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 and repeated conflicts with the English Parliament. Under James, the "Golden Age" of Elizabethan literature and drama continued, with writers such as William Shakespeare, John Donne, Ben Jonson, and Francis Bacon contributing to a flourishing literary culture. James himself was a prolific writer, authoring works such as Daemonologie (1597) (a study on demonology and the methods demons used to bother troubled men, a book which endorses the practice of witch hunting), The True Law of Free Monarchies (1598), and Basilikon Doron (1599). He sponsored the translation of the Bible into English later named after him, the Authorized King James Version, and the 1604 revision of the Book of Common Prayer. Anthony Weldon claimed that James had been termed "the wisest fool in Christendom", an epithet associated with his character ever since. Since the latter half of the 20th century, historians have tended to revise James's reputation and treat him as a serious and thoughtful monarch. He was strongly committed to a peace policy, and tried to avoid involvement in religious wars, especially the Thirty Years' War that devastated much of Central Europe. He tried but failed to prevent the rise of hawkish elements in the English Parliament who wanted war with Spain. https://store.earthstation1.com/monarchy-in-the-uk-british-royal-family-history-films-dvd.html

March 27, 1866: The Reconstruction Era (Reconstruction): The Civil Rights Act Of 1866: -- The Civil Rights Act Of 1866 (14 Stat. 27-30), the first United States federal law to define citizenship and affirm that all citizens are equally protected by the law, is vetoed by President Andrew Johnson; his veto will be overridden by Congress and the bill passed into law on April 9. The Civil Rights Act Of 1866 act was mainly intended to protect the civil rights of persons of African descent born in or brought to the U.S., in the wake of the American Civil War. This legislation was enacted by Congress in 1865 but vetoed by President Andrew Johnson. In April 1866 Congress again passed the bill to support the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. Although Johnson again vetoed it, a two-thirds majority in each chamber overcame the veto and the bill therefore became law. John Bingham and some other congressmen argued that Congress did not yet have sufficient constitutional power to enact this law. Following passage of the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868, which addressed citizenship rights and equal protection under the laws in response to issues related to former slaves following the American Civil War, Congress reenacted the 1866 Act in 1871. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-american-adventure-series-us-1st-century-4-dv14.html
